Membership Drive Contest

Starting on September 25, 2006 and running through Halloween, October 31, 2006, BookTalk.org will be having a membership drive contest. I'm hoping all active members will find the award attractive enough to participate in this contest. ;)

What is the award?

The top 3 members bringing in the most new members during the contest period will all receive a FREE copy of Penguin Publishing’s exciting new release, The Looking Glass Wars. This book hits book retailers tomorrow, September 26th. If you're not able to participate in the contest I still suggest you check out the below links and consider getting a copy of the book.

About the Book

A little girl named Alice tumbled down a rabbit hole and proceeded to have a charming adventure in the delightful, made-up world of Wonderland...Now discover the truth behind Alyss of Wonderland . . .

Alyss Heart, heir to the Wonderland throne, was forced to flee through the Pool of Tears after a bloody palace coup staged by the murderous Redd. Lost and alone in Victorian London, Alyss is befriended by an aspiring author to whom she tells the violent, heartbreaking story of her young life only to see it published as the nonsensical Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Alyss had trusted Lewis Carroll to tell the truth so that someone, somewhere would find her and bring her home. But Carroll had gotten it all wrong. He even misspelled her name! If not for royal bodyguard Hatter Madigan's nonstop search to locate the lost princess, Alyss may have become just another society woman sipping tea in a too-tight corset instead of returning to Wonderland to fight Redd for her rightful place as the Queen of Hearts.

Meet the heroic, passionate, monstrous, vengeful denizens of this parallel world as they battle each other with AD-52's and orb generators, navigate the Crystal Continuum, bet on jabberwock fights and travel across the Chessboard Desert.

The Looking Glass Wars unabashedly challenges our Wonderland assumptions of mad tea parties, sleepy dormice, and a curious little blonde girl to reveal an epic battle in the endless war for Imagination.

What constitutes a new member?

A new member is one that has never before posted on BookTalk's forums. In addition, we are requiring that these new members make a total of 10 quality posts during the contest period. So please do not register new accounts or have friends spam the community. This is cheating and you will be caught, exposed and flogged. ::20 IP addresses are visible to me.

How can I find new members?

Tell your friends and family about BookTalk. Email the ones that are not local. As an online book discussion community our members can and do live just about everywhere in the world.

When you're at a bookstore and you see someone reading the types of books we read here on BookTalk mention us. I do this all the time and we've gained several members this way.

When you visit other web sites mention BookTalk and put a link back to our community. And be sure to specify "BookTalk.org" and not "BookTalk.com." I wish I could acquire that URL!!!

Do whatever it takes. Again, the top 3 current members bringing in the most new members will win a free copy of the book. I'll try to run these types of contests regularly, from this point forward.

Official Site:
www.thelookingglasswars.com

MySpace Page:
www.myspace.com/alyss_heart

How will the winners be determined?

We'll obviously need the new members to tell us how they learned of BookTalk!

May the best member win!

These 3 books are currently being mailed directly to me. On Halloween night we'll look at the numbers.

I've got between 15 ~ 50 readers a day on my book-related blog (Who are these people?!?), and I've just posted about the new book & BookTalk (yes, .org!)

Thank you Lori!!

I believe we'll start giving away multiple free books every single month. Unless more members jump on this Membership Drive opportunity you will have yourself an awesome source for new reading material!

I am shocked at how many book review offers we are getting every week. The challenge is keeping up with them. Please keep mentioning BookTalk wherever you can!

I'm a little dissappointed that more members aren't participating in this membership drive. We could use the help in recruiting new members and the free book and CD should be enticing to a community of book lovers.

I have been spreading the word...and I do not care about the book. I have always spread the word about booktalk. But I cannot drag people here. I do not know what to do to get people to join!

I will keep doing my best.

I don't know either. This is the most frustrating part about running BookTalk. Finding more members isn't easy.

This contest is a flop. I might need to figure out a better way to give away these 3 books.

Any ideas?? Not a single person is participating in this membership drive.

At this point I'm thinking the current contest isn't going to work. And reading NadiaAoC's life story thread, found in the Member's Personal Writing forum, has given me a different idea for a contest.

I'm going to end this contest and redesign a new one. How do you all feel about the idea of awarding free books for members that write the best stories? I'd like to start building up the content of our site, not the forum postings, so this contest could get the ball rolling.

We could have a "My Life Story" contest where the top essay winners receive free books. We now have 3 copies of "The Looking Glass Wars" and 3 autographed copies of "Atheist Universe" in the mail. To be honest we have no shortage of free books available from publishers. There is a possibility that winners can be given a list of books from which to pick.

I really am loving NadiaAoC's story and am now realizing that this is something we should have done long ago. I'll close this thread and create a new contest rules thread.
