| I just found out about this whole Lucid Dreaming thing. You've probably heard about it from people who claim it proves there's an afterlife or some such nonsense. Its when you're dreaming, but you know its a dream and are completely concious instead of all hazy and disoriented. Supposedly you can also have complete control over what happens. The wikipedia entry one it makes it sound relatively legit. I'll probably just be disapointed, but hey I'll give it a try once I have some free time it sounds fun. |

| You know this isn't really philosophy. Maybe it should be moved to general. |

I love when this happens. Sometimes I try to see how long I can keep it going, like when there are obvious distractions in the outside environment.
I love altered states of consciousness...but I cannot say anything more, lest I get myself in trouble!

There's suposedly several ways of inducing it. I can't recal ever having a dream thats anything like that.
You say you've done it? Its supposed to be a pretty unusual thing. |

It happens sometimes. I know I am awake, but I am still continuing the dream I was having. I always loose the fight to fall back to sleep and dream it out...
I feel as if I cannot move, paralyzed and yet I feel like my motive power is slowly returning, along with my consciousness.
It does not happen often.

| Sounds a bit like the opposite to me. The descriptions I've heard make it sound like you're fully aware as though in a waking state, yet you're obviously dreaming, and have control over the dream. |

I frequently have lucid dreams, espeacially when I have gone a long period of time without sleep. At times I can become totally aware I am dreaming. And yes you can take control of what is happening. This is something you can practice and get better at over time. The interesting thing I have found, is once I realize I am dreaming, I can actually run, or fly or punch my boss without the disappointing sensation of slow motion.
Also many times I have the uncanny feeling that I have visited these dream places before. I know the house I am in or the road I am on, and I know how to get to a certain destination. Yet when I wake, I do not know these places and I would to rack my brain trying to figure out if these were actual memories or just products of an absorbant subconsious.
I remember having one rather disturbing lucid dream where I had a memory (while dreaming) of a young female family member (who in reality, never existed) who drowned in a well. I asked family members about the possibility of such an event actually occurring, but fortunatly they confirmed it had not.
I do see how some people who have lucid dreams might come to certain conclusions about an afterlife, reincarnation, or even other dimensions. But, I just think the brain can absorb so much information we can fool ourselves very easily by the uncanny feelings they can give us.
I will always enjoy being able to punch people, and know I can get away with it.
Oh yeah! Then there is the sex. Yeah... huh,huh,.. the sex. |

| I have dreams of stupid people. I'm not kidding. My fiance jokes about this all the time. For whatever reason I talk out loud when sleeping frequently. And I must be saying what I'm thinking in the dream - not what I'm dreaming I'm saying - because I'm always saying stuff like, "Oh my God you're such a friggin idiot!" I just don't talk to people like that in real life, but I frequently am thinking things along those lines. |

| I guess I have lucid dreams. I never called them that, but it seems that is what they are. The times I have had them were during nightmares. I have been lucid enough to know that I wanted out of a nightmare. Sometimes I have willed myself to wake by trying to make my eyes open. Sometimes, I try to will a part of my body to move, thinking that such a movement will wake me. Sometimes it does. Most often, I try to speak or scream out loud in the real world so that someone sleeping next to me will hear me and wake me. In fact, I've told people I'm living with that I do this and to wake me, please. Usually doing any of these things is very difficult. The screaming or speaking I imagine I'm doing is usually only a barely audible murmur for the person hearing it. I am aware of this in the lucid dream and work very hard at getting louder. I have also changed the bad person or bad part of the dream by willing it so. What sucks is that usually I will be successful at making the change, but then my dreaming(non lucid) state returns to change the person or circumstance back. I basically fight with myself over the direction of the dream! I am glad to hear of others doing these kinds of things. I've never met anyone who could do that in their dreams. |

I've experienced both the lucid dreaming and the paralyzed feeling. The lucid dreaming can be pleasurable sometimes, or other times it can be a nightmare situation as tara mentioned where I sort of jolt myself awake, which is unfortunately more common than the pleasurable version. In both scenarios, I usually become aware that I'm dreaming somehow.
I'm not really sure how it happens in the nightmare scenario - maybe it's as much wishful thinking as anything - but in the pleasurable version, I usually recognize something implausible, like being able to breathe underwater while swimming, and think, "Hey I'm dreaming," at which point I can control events, although it doesn't seem to last very long for some reason.
The paralyzed feeling is different for me. It tends to happen when I fall asleep and then wake up prematurely for some reason, but my body still seems to be asleep. It's a very disturbing feeling, and I break out of it by starting to move one part of my body like an arm back and forth until I can move again. It used to happen to me a lot when I was younger, perhaps because I used to work the graveyard shift and my sleep cycle was all screwed up. I havent had that happen in a long time.
