No, Penny, it's not Oliver Twist.
And yes, DWill, the clues are connected; two clues so far, one book.

Mr. President - you are a 'GEM' -
Thank you - for your kind words - and for making me laugh just now.
Just between you and me....I think it really is Les Miz - but Ralph is not willing to admit that you got it straight away.
We could try - Annie? |

Annie!!??? I think Ralph's clues need reiterating!
Ralph's clues:
| Quote: |
Two shots. Mother dead, child lives, end of story. Heredity versus environment?
Here's clue #2:
First a best-selling book, then a big hit on Broadway, an award winning movie (one of the actresses won an Academy Award), and lastly, a highly rated made-for-TV movie.
|
I think it must be a drama, hardly sounds like a musical or comedy. For some dumb reason, Three Faces of Eve keeps coming to mind, but I am sure that is wrong. Here are the questions to ask in order to solve:
Two shots of what? A gun? Who did the shooting, mother, child (I assume a daughter) or other? How old is the child when mother dies? Traumatic experience for child - so, did she grow up bad or emotionally damaged or what? What actresses won an academy award for a role in a movie that was also a Broadway play?
You'd think with a strategy like this, I'd know the answer! Nope....

Honestly, this is getting way out of control.
It is Les Miserables. Ralph has been looking for another book for three days now that has the same clues so that he doesn't need to say that I'm right.
Give it up Ralph!!!! Admit it! |

I've got a pain in my stomach with laughing - of course it might be hysteria.....but I do appreciate this amusement.
Well.....I don't know what happens on Broadway do I? I always think of Musicals when I think of Broadway - as in 'Give my Regards to'.
And as for 'made for TV movies'.....humph...tut tut.
I'm just throwing in wild guesses.......'The Grapes of Wrath?'
Give us a clue Billy!!!! (Ralph - is it American? English? European, Russian, Mongolian?)
We have a local radio station, Radio Merseyside which plays music and has a quiz - listeners 'phone in' and the common catch phrase is.....
'Aw...come on....give us a clue Billy'. Billy gives some great clues....and he gets some great 'wrong' answers. It is all very amusing because Liverpool people have a great sense of humour anyway....
So come on - Awe.....come on....give us clue!!!!!!!!! |

Les Miz has never been an award winning moivie with one of the actresses winning an Oscar - and how does "two shots, mother dead, child lives," etc., pertain to Les Miz?
Here's another clue of sorts: Saffron is closest with "Psycho," although it has never been a Broadway hit. But, and here's the clue, the novel is of that genre.
And Penelope, it was also a hit on the West-End (in your lifetime), but is an American novel and author we are looking for.
