Post Is there a HELP FOR IDIOTS forum here?
In addition to the excellent FAQ section, which is very, very abundant, I still have a few questions on how to do things here. I'll limit myself to just one for now.

How do I go about adding a TAGLINE to my posts? I already tried and failed to do a "signature" after reading the FAQ instructions.

Hello and welcome booklady! It takes a little time to learn all the ropes.

Look up at the top, and click onto user control panel. This can be found right under forums, its a little hard to see.

Click onto profile

Click onto edit signature

WaLa!

Hope this helps.

Post Where do I go - which Forum for HELP - to learn the ropes?
Thank you. So you put your Tagline the same place as your Signature. Got it. I love your Avatar, Signature and Tagline.

That's also where I went to try to do my Signature. I tried to make it Bold, previewed it, nada. Tried to Italicize it, ditto. Then tried to make it the color purple (that sounds familiar for some reason) and look at it above. Still messed up.

I spent over an hour trying to personalize my AVATAR and failed miserably. I badly want to do that. So much to learn. Is there a HELP forum? Where does one go to posts questions for Help learning the ropes and navigating around, etc.?

What?! You want to replace the flying pigs, those little piggies are so cute! I'm sorry you are having such a hard time booklady. To add a color, I believe all you need to do is highlight the portion of the text you want in color, then click on one of the colors on the right.

Yes, it's called, HELP! Then wait for some nice knowledgable person to come to your rescue. I wish I could be of more help, but I use the try, try again, and then again method. Don't worry, you'll get it. :)

Post Re: Is there a HELP FOR IDIOTS forum here?
No, never replace my dear little piggies, but "personalize" my avatar like most members here have. I very much like what I see.

As for my signature, I have done exactly what you said. I typed it out - just Booklady, then went down to the color Purple (because I love your Bold and Green signature and Chris's nice Red one) and clicked on it after highlighting what I typed and see for yourself how it came out in my above post at 11:14. Pitiful.

So, I take it we don't have a HELP Forum for issues not covered in the very abundant and huge FAQ page. If membership increases beyond 6,000, maybe it's something we here at BT.Org might give some thought to. Look at me. A long time veteran of dozens of book clubs, groups and forums asking questions here. Odd. But this site is very, very different - in a wonderful way, natch.

Ah, OK, Bold and Green, “Suzanne” above my avatar represents; Moderator. You will see Bold and Green for Saffron and Interbane as well, as they are also moderators. The Red “Chris OConnor” indicates Administrator. I don’t think you can change the color of your name above your avatar. Is this what you are trying to do? You certainly can use any color you want in your signature line, and I can see that you have been trying this without luck. Do you want “booklady” in purple to appear UNDER your post as a signature line?

Let me play with my own, I’ll try to get my signature in purple.

Post Re: Is there a HELP FOR IDIOTS forum here?
OK, now my signature line is in purple. Egads!

I highlighted my signature and clicked onto a color, and poof, my signature line is now purple. Since you already have something in you signature line, you can click onto "edit signature" and turn what ever text you would like into any color you would like.

But, again, I don't believe you have any color options regarding your user name ABOVE your avatar. Unless, you are very clever and can insert your name across or inside of your avatar. That's really cool. Can't help you with that, sorry.

"The Color Purple", Alice Walker, excellent book. Doesn't hold a purple candle to "Beloved", Toni Morrison however.

Post HELP FOR IDIOTS + Newbies ;-)
Yes, I am trying to get my Signature Booklady purple but as you can see, it just is not working for me.

Also, if you look at my taglines closely, you will see that I highlighted them and tried to Italicize them. Nada. I'm jinxed I guess. Not fair at all.

As for your Avatar, you have a nice saying under your photo. That's what I very much want to do to my little flying piggies. Insert a line under them like you did. I tried for 2 days.

We really ought to have support here for these kinds of member problems IMHO. Just my 2 cents from the peanut gallery, LOL.

Go into your signature again. Below the text input box there is a button that says "Disable BBCode." For some reason you have this clicked. Unclick it and your signature will work. In fact I will do this for you.

We do have a support forum. It is a subforum below the "BookTalk.org News & Feedback" forum. You should allow yourself a few weeks to look around. Most of what you're finding to be problems will sort itself out over time.

That saying is automatic and is based on the number of posts. It will change as you make more posts. Nobody has control over that saying.

Post Re: Is there a HELP FOR IDIOTS forum here?
You've asked some other questions via email or in posts. I will try to answer them briefly here.

- I am the administrator and owner of BookTalk.org.

- We have many Moderators. You can see their names in the sidebar block. It shows Admins and Mods.

- You asked about earning points. We don't have a points system so I assume you are referring to the "Thanks" you can earn. You earn this is the exact same way you do in real life. Over time you will figure this all out. Click on all the links in the sidebar, profile, etc... You will start to get the hang of it. Quite frankly you are doing better than most members as you have an avatar and signature working. You're just trying to have the entire site mastered in a few days and this won't happen. It takes time. You're doing a good job.

- "I don't know what a team page is..."

Neither do I. If you saw the FAQ refer to a "team page" ignore it. We don't have team pages and I don't know what they are. That FAQ comes preloaded with the software that runs our site.

- " How old is this site?"

We started on May 5, 2002.

Quote:
"Having been a long time veteran of many, many, many of these types of
forums, clubs, groups, what have you (I've seen it all) I have a
mother-lode of wonderful ideas and suggestions for you based on my
experiences, if you are interested. A primary one and IMHO, a necessary
one is a direct "go to" one for HELP. I feel that it should be placed
right on the Home Page where even a blind person can't miss it."

We do have the FAQ link on the home page and most of your questions are answered there.

Quote:
Lastly, I saw somewhere a post for suggestions for non-fiction discussion
or something for Sept.-Oct. Well, I have the perfect book. The Absolutely
Most Perfect one. So, I go in to suggest it and lo and behold, I find that
I cannot do so because I, a registered member of BT am deficient in
something or other. Like WOW! What's that all about? I was quite hurt,
dejected, bummed out and disappointed to put it mildly. Just thought you
might be interested in a new member's experience here and impressions.

There are good reasons why new members cannot suggest books for our group discussions. They are all common sense. If you start clicking on threads and reading everything will start to make sense.

Post Re: Is there a HELP FOR IDIOTS forum here?
I did have that "disable" box checked - just noticed it myself, you were correct. I unchecked it and as you can see in my TEST post (I finally found that sub-forum on my own also) all is well. Finally.

Thank you very much for your help and explanations and you also Suzanne. You guys rock!

Whew. Got past that hurdle. The rest should be gravy.
