Wow, McCain-Rice. I hadn't considered that combo. And it could be she'd accept, despite what she's been saying. Going to the VP from Sec'y of State might seem like a big demotion in the short run, but remember she has witnessed Dick Cheney amass enormous power over the last 8 years, and might see that as a model she could copy. Not saying she's like the Machiavelian Dick, but she wouldn't want to be attending state funerals for 4-8 years, either.

Well, DWill, that scenario seems to have come and gone very quickly. Ms. Rice very wisely ended that speculation herself; she'll be going back to academia and her piano. That would have been the most cynical, transparent and just plain stupid ploy in modern politics. You can fool some of the voters all the time, you can fool all of the voters some of the time, but you can't fool all (or enough) of the voters all the time.

Do you really still believe that McCain will win? I think their are real health issues with him and there's something rotten in Denmark with his wife's finances. I watched Polital Capitol on Blumberg Television recently and he just refused to talk about his wife's money or making her tax records public. He simply said that they had signed a pre-nuptial (and what exactly does that have to do with the question) and that her business is her business. End of discussion. He doesn't seem to realize that when you are running for President, your business (and your wife's business) is everybody's business.

Only if the Democrats self-destruct, which has been known to happen.

Ralphalinos, trying to think like a las Vegas oddsmaker, yes, I think it is still McCain's race to lose. I haven't heard about this stuff you mention with Cindy McCain. Anything like this is no doubt balm for the Democrats. Boy, is politics a sordid business.

McCain is managing to look vigorous enough so far. The voters still remember the Gipper fondly, and he was only a little younger than McCain when he was elected.

HRC is the more electable democrat at this point despite a load of baggage. But the system the party has erected is stacked against her.

Is that what the odds-makers in Vegas are saying? Are they betting on McCain?

I heard a commentator on CNN mention that McCain couldn't even comb his own hair. And his face always looks about to explode to me. Seriously, has he released his medical records? Remember when most of the country didn't know that Roosevelt spent his life in a wheelchair? Maybe that's what a McCain presidency will be - but I don't think the subject of McCain's health is a dead issue at all; it will keep coming up.

Reagan was in the best of health, wasn't he? Certainly he exuded a youthful exuberance - in spite of his orange hair. Remember his quip to Mondale which put all the age business to rest. I don't think McCain is as quick on his feet, do you?

Do you know where Cindy McCain got her money? I don't, but it will all come out eventually. And didn't they adopt a young girl from Bangladesh? They do have children of their own, don't they? I think I emember hearing recently that their son returned from a tour of duty in Iraq.

None of this is anti-McCain at all; he's a real patriot and probably a decent man (who has had to reign in his temper during this campaign, right?) It has to do with putting all your cards on the table (or, in today's vernacular, "transparency.")

I think you're right about Hilary. But I think that, if she continues to stay and fight, eventually the voters are going to come around to, "that old broad is a fighter, she isn't going anywhere, despite what the political pundits advise." Then they will realize that this is an admirable quality and the tide will turn. But I agree, this better happen soon or it will be too late.

And more and more of Obama's garbage seems to be coming out. If he is nominated, it will be a great boon for McCain and I can see your scenario being correct.

How has your Spring been - is everything blooming and all the snow gone?

Ralphalinos, greetings. As for the snow, it never arrived! My location in Virginia may look northern, but this is the South as far as I'm concerned. I would be happy to get more snow! But, at the same time, spring is very welcome.

I'm not really very political in a partisan sense. I like to look on, though. Any number of things could happen in the presidential horserace. I like your HRC scenario whereby through sheer doggedness she wins the admiration of the voters. But before that, she's still got to fight it out in a lot of smoke-filled rooms to get the superdelegates to come over to her corner. (I suppose the smoke-filled room is actually a thing of the past.)

Don't you wonder why we haven't heard more about McCain's health? It's almost as though the media is saying, "It's not time yet." But you know they're going to start on this sometime. Reagan did project a physicality--riding his horse, clearing brush--that McCain hasn't and maybe isn't able to. But any problems attributed to his 5 years as a POW probably will elicit as much sympathy as skepticism about his fitness for the office. His temper has been legendary. His camp's position is "got it under control now," but we'll see. Just one outburst could sink him.

Far less than a sure thing, from the picture I painted! But without big gaffes, I still say he's got it.

The POW issue is pretty big in my opinion. Who comes back from war normal? I've heard horror stories of the emotional stress that people from war endure. Some go pretty loony. This guy was not only in the war, he was a prisoner of war and survived a "campaign" of severe torture against him.

Have you read this guys military record? Before you consider "hero", I want you to consider "potential nut-job".

This was lifted from Wikipedia so take it for what its worth.

By then a lieutenant commander, McCain was almost killed on July 29, 1967, when he was at the epicenter of the Forrestal fire. McCain escaped from his burning jet and was trying to help another pilot escape when a bomb exploded;[31] McCain was struck in the legs and chest by fragments.[32] The ensuing fire killed 134 sailors and took 24 hours to control.

There's a lot more and it gets even worse....

John McCain's capture and imprisonment began on October 26, 1967. He was flying his 23rd bombing mission over North Vietnam, when his A-4E Skyhawk was shot down by a missile over Hanoi.[37][38][39][40] McCain fractured both arms and a leg,[41] and then nearly drowned when he parachuted into Truc Bach Lake in Hanoi.[37] After he regained consciousness, a mob attacked him,[42] crushed his shoulder with a rifle butt, and bayoneted him; he was then transported to Hanoi's main Hoa Loa Prison, nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton".[42][43]

Whew! I didn't know all that - no wonder the man has a temper.

Was McCain married to Cindy while he was in the military? I believe that McCain would never have been a contender at all without his military background and his captivity (much like John Glenn and his successful political career after his adventures in space). Both true American heroes who have been much honored (and rewarded) for their heroism.

DWill - If it does come to a smoke-filled room, and it may, I'd put my money on Hilary - her and her husband are no strangers to back-room politics and I think she'd wipe the floor with her opponent.

President Comacho - Nobody who runs for President of the United States is normal - I think that's a given.

Of course, you being President, would be more familiar with this than I; how normal are you?

Spring is my favorite time of the year; I always enjoyed the trees budding, leaves turning green and the flowers coming back after the winter. I miss that; we don't have spring here - it just goes from pleasantly cool to miserably hot - overnight. But we do have flowers and lots of greenery year-round.

The message I think I want to get across is to vote for a monarchy or at least a brand name. It's about time that the United States had a monarchy. We're one of the only nations on earth that hasn't had one yet and it's getting a little tiresome being reminded of it. Therefore, to follow the trend of amassed power and to better create inequality of wealth, this is the only solution. There are only two parties but there needs to be just one. Why waste our time voting. Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton and then that should be it. Just crown Clinton and call it a day already. I'm tired of democracy and the dispersion of power. I don't want 100000000 people to have power. I want only 1 person to have it - and if they feel like giving some out - at least it will only be limited to their friends and I won't need to be bothered with it. Now, anything is possible.

It's impossible to avoid listening to McCain on CNN every day (though he is not yet on French channels), and honestly I'm not impressed.
"Better than Bush" he certainly is, but this is poor comfort.
I'm am worried by his lack of ideas, his constent reference to his opponent, the few ideas that he does express, and he comes accross as being slow and not very intelligent.
Is this because he is a poor orator? Did he do well during his years as a Senator?

People are beginning to call him "Bush 3" and this is what he sounds like.

I am surprised to hear his supporters laugh at his rather feeble jokes. It seems that for them being a patriot and a nice guy may pull the trick once more!

Hopefully we will not find out how President McCain will fare. Why are we counting out Obama?

The way I see it...people are getting sick of Republican rule. My long time Repuglican friend is voting democratic. This is amazing to me, as he was a stalwart for Bush and the Republican nonsense all his life.

Republican had their shot at total control and they fucked it all up. I cannot see the party holding on right now...but I also could not see how Bush could get elected twice either. I can go either way.

I dont know...but I have this sense that history will be made this election.

I am not counting out Obama, I'm just worried that the polls put the two candidates so close to each other when McCain is obviously not a good candidate.

Obama already has the unaninous votes of "the rest of the world", but my sources tell me those votes will again not reach the ballot box-- which is a shame, as I think we would return a reasonable candidate with a greater freequency.

I think age is a factor that should play against McCain. Miterrand and Chirac in France, and Reagan in the US, were much too old in their second terms (terms used to be 7 years in France).
I think there are things you can do in your seventies, for example continue to run a family business you've run all your life, or paint in you are an artist, and a lot of other things, but you should exclude: becoming the CEO of a big multinational for the first time, running for president, or running for the Olympics.
The way McCain moves and speaks look slow to me, and unsuitable to the tasks he will have to face.

Obama is too inexperienced for such a position. And he appears to make bad decisions on a regular basis.

Of course many nations want Obama as Commander in Chief of the United States military forces. I would too if I were Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or any of the other sponsors of terrorism. There is very little chance that a pacifist like Obama will ever challenge terrorism directly.

If Russia continues their aggression in Europe who will bail out the former Soviet republics? Obama or McCain? Putin has plans to rejoin those republics. If you doubt this keep watching the news this week.
