Post How do you feel about the Tea Party movement?
if you have ever watched Glenn Beck or Sarah Palin on the cable news channels and really listen to what they are saying about the horrible situation this country is in including the financial debt that is astronomical. Have you tried lately to get a student loan for those going off to college? my main stumbling block is Obama care. That plan is so full of loopholes that I hope and pray that it never comes to pass. The only thing I agree with is that I am 100% disabled and the clause for 'pre-existing conditions' has now come to pass and will never be a problem again. That is probably the only thing I agree with. Obama care is a huge mess and a total waste of taxpayers dollars. It's nice to see that with all going on in the world, our wonderful ( and I say that bluntly) so-called president has nothing else to do but write stories about his children!!

So listen carefully to what the tea party represents. This is YOUR country! When you go to vote next week try to remember all the horrible things that are going on around the world, whether it be all the wars we are doing battle in or the great financial situation that this country is living every single day. Just give it some thought when you pull the lever on election Day!

I always like to see individuals getting involved in their government even if I do not agree with some of their solutions to the problems of our country.

Post Re: How do you feel about the Tea Party movement?
thank you seespotrun for your comment. I believe every individual of voting age should get involved by trying to find out who the best person would be for the job! Instead of just pulling levers on
November 2 it's not always the right thing to do. That is what I used to do. Because our government is faced with so very many problems, I realized it was time to do something about that. in our state, Pennsylvania, we are voting for Gov. and Sen. our state is in a mess right now as are most others, so I knew it was time to take matters into my own hands and really review each candidates platforms and who would be the best person for the job. I am happy to say that I am one of the tea party activists and I highly believe that more people should just check out what the tea party represents and then decide for themselves!

Post Re: How do you feel about the Tea Party movement?
agreed 100%. Everyone needs to vote.

Disagree with almost everything else.
I have already addressed a lot of these issues at length in other threads. I will provide links where appropriate.

Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin represent everything that is useless and stymied in America. These are the representatives of knee jerk reactionary, jingoistic, superstitious gut voters. People who vote based on their feelings rather than an understanding of the situation. Being folksy, or screaming like an idiot at a black board does nothing to effectively address the real problems of our country.

the-plight-of-the-sane-conservative-t9016.html

Make no mistake, Fox “news” is nothing but a direct media outlet for the conservative right.
you-do-us-proud-jon-t7285.html
glen-beck-has-nazi-tourettes-t8465.html

It is a propaganda tool used to bolster the positions of the republican party and produce a sense of legitimacy for outright non-sense positions when they are spoken by allegedly non-partisan “news” personalities.

One thing it certainly is not, is “fair and balanced.”
http://www.outfoxed.org/

Financial debt
The country certainly is in dire straits.
Consider this.
republican-plan-to-reduce-deficit-t8922.html

Republicans have had control of the congress and presidency, to one degree or another for the last eight years. During which the gross mismanagement of our economy drove us back from the brink of saliency under president Bill Clinton. View the links. Reagan shot the deficit into the air like it was a high flying cheerleader. Clinton made headway in correcting that trend, then Bush Jr took over and it looks like he was trying to create a topographic map with his budget. Almost strait up.

Obama is being blamed for our bad economy when it is George Bush who started two wars of aggression, wasting billions of tax dollars and borrowing from other countries to pay for them. George Bush instituted obscene tax cuts which cost the united states 700 billion dollars a year. 700 billion dollars a year that also had to be borrowed from foreign powers, increasing our debt while padding the pockets of the super-rich.
obama-the-tax-hiker-t9074.html

Of course this is a tremendous burden to lift.
The perception is that Obama has increased our national debt, thanks in no small part to the constant haranguing of fox news. The truth is that Bush’s last budget had a 1.416 trillion dollar deficit. Obama’s first budget reduced that debt to 1.29 trillion.

Obama care
national-health-care-t6866.html

So all of the Obama health plan is a gross misuse of funds, except that part which applies to you? Surely you see the hypocrisy. I would say “put yourself in their position” but you already are in that position. You know the difficulties inherent with our medical system. You know the insane, senseless hurdles you must jump, the heartless, processed assembly line of for-profit health care. Extend that line of thought to the others who go without. You never said it, but it certainly lingers in the air that this is just part of the socialist agenda. That is a boogie man from the 80’s and I would hope we have grown up enough to no longer fear the monster under our beds. There is nothing scary about socialism. Just ask our seniors about how terrible socialized medicine is. Or our troops. Or Europe.

The tea party.
The tea party’s primary message is outrage. Is it any wonder they work so splendidly with Fox “news” who’s whole business model is based on scaring the crap out of its audience with trumped up hyperbolic scare tactics, and stoking the fires for the Professionally Offended.

Ask yourself this.
Why is everyone so upset about spending money to take care of our people? To make sure the sick people are healed, to teach our children what they need to succeed, to reduce the leverage the top 1% of the country wield over the powerless masses.

Why do the tea partiers hold rallies to shout down free health care, but we never saw a peep out of them when it came to the expensive killing of brown people?

NOW they are outraged? NOW they call down the authority?

Starting two senseless wars against a concept. (fighting a war on terrorism is no different than fighting a war against murder. There is no headquarters for a mode of behavior. No leadership to topple, no training camps to dismantle.)
Abuse of presidential power, signing statements, outing our own spies for cheap political revenge, actually shooting a man in the face, with the VP’s own trigger finger, and nobody says boo.

Try to heal the sick and destitute and there will be hell to pay with the tea partiers.

all I can say, is that I am proud to be a tea party activist. I posted on another site how I feel about the health care reform. Unfortunately, people aren't giving enough consideration to the tea party and we will see within a few years if we were all right. A person cannot force another person to vote or not vote for a particular person. But we can try to wake up all Americans as to what is really going on in this country under Obama's regime. Enough said.

That seems to be a recurring theme. Everyone against health care reform are against the entire thing "except" the part that helps them. Selfish naivete.

Post Re: How do you feel about the Tea Party movement?
The Tea Party is not against affordable health care, or against helping people who need help. There is no argument that the health care delivery system in this country is broken but the bill rammed down the throats of the country last year does nothing to fix that. How dare congress pass a law that few had read? How dare the Speaker of the House tell us that we'll find out what is in the bill after it takes effect?

We also have to stop regulating businesses out of business and mortgaging our grandchildren's futures with expenditures we cannot afford. They are the ones who are being taxed without representation.

That's what the Tea Party is.

What is your exact argument with the health care plan, phillies? Why is it a waste of money in your opinion?

I personally do not trust Sarah Palin or Glenn Beck. Each one is a politician. The problem with Glenn Beck is that he tries to come off as someone who is telling the truth when he is really only telling half truths or no truths. Sarah Palin is a politician so I expect that from her.

I know that the health care plan is not perfect, but my 22 year old brother now has health care because it is now required that children have the option of being on their parents health plan until the age of 26. People 26 and under do not always think about that, but that is awesome. Now he can go to the doctor if he needs to, without worrying about how the bill is going to be paid. You are right, preexisting conditions are going to go away. Insurance will no longer be able to drop you after you get sick. I personally hate the way that women's healthcare became a political issue, yet I still think having health care for everyone is really important. I think that changes can be made as we go, but let's get something on the table. What real plan do the republicans have for health care reform? For making sure that everyone can go to a doctor if they need to? Unfortunately in order to have basic needs someone has to pay for that. Why is it not ok for all of us to chip in so that our whole community gets what they need? I think there has to be a balance between individuality and community. Both are important, but both should be honored.

Post Re: How do you feel about the Tea Party movement?
the only and biggest gripe I have about the health care bill is that too much time like I said before, and too much money has been spent on something that will never come to pass unless everyone agrees upon it. Again, what worries most people are all the loopholes in it. I am the fortunate one as I have health coverage through my husband's company. They allow all testing on women on gynecologic annual checkups and especially a mammogram yearly. I am also against aborting a fetus unless the girl in question was raped or becomes deathly ill or her own life is compromised. I feel this way for many reasons but mostly because my sister-in-law could not have children the conventional way and so my sister-in-law and brother decided to adopt. If it were not for the baby's birth mother carrying my nephew to term, my brother would not have the son that he always wanted. So now you see my stance on abortion.

I absolutely agree that all Americans should have been given the opportunity to find out what exactly Obama care is all about. Nancy Pelosi should be fired for making a statement like that. After all, this healthcare bill affects every citizen in this country. I am not against healthcare that is affordable we should all know what our options are as far as this bill is concerned. Thank you for being on the same side as me. I wish others would look at these views realistically.

Right, let the businesses do whatever they want. You're parroting propaganda from the lobbyists of the rich. I agree that business should be as unregulated as possible, while the bad parts should be regulated. But this ridiculous generalization that they shouldn't be regulated is idiocy.

Do you not think we should regulate companies for carbon emissions? There's NO WAY we puny humans could ever affect the Earth that GOD created! Global warming is a scam! Talk about jeopardizing our grandchildren's future!

Certain bills need to be rammed down people's throats. The same incorrigible and unthinking stubborness is found in DC as we've seen right here on these forums. It's religious absolutist thinking. If someone CANNOT see the truth since their blinders are welded to their skull, what other avenue of approach is there? Note I'm not advocating hypocrisy. I'm not claiming I know the truth. But what I do know is that certain people are wrong, though they adamantly claim to be correct. We need to get those people out of DC and stop listening to them. Beck and Palin included.

Post Re: How do you feel about the Tea Party movement?
Before jumping on the Tea Party bandwagon, I'd like to know exactly what it is. Currently the Tea Party is a vague, grass roots movement comprised of many different interests. Sure, there are some good ideas there, but certainly no platform to speak of, no consensus among Tea Party members, and no concrete plans on addressing the serious issues facing our country.

In other words, the same old thing. They've switched hats is all.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

This is certainly the canard that's going around. Many folks seem to be blaming our economic woes on Obama, though the economic collapse clearly occurred under Bush's watch.

I agree that the healthcare bill was passed at a most inopportune time and that the fewer things left to government control the better (including American automakers). But let's be realistic here. Obama came into office during a fairly dramatic downturn that was probably many years in the making. To say the Tea Party is going to fix everything seems rather simplistic to me. Though if you're getting your news from Glenn Beck, simplistic is what you're going to get.

We host live author chats where booktalk members can interact with and interview authors. We give away free books to our members in book giveaway contests. Our booktalks are open to everybody who enjoys talking about books. Our book forums include book reviews, author interviews and book resources for readers and book lovers. Discussing books is our passion. We're a literature forum, or reading forum. Register a free book club account today! Suggest nonfiction and fiction books. Authors and publishers are welcome to advertise their books or ask for an author chat or author interview.
