** Help me edit our LINKS page! **
Our LINKS page is in need of a major update. In the past our slogan was "the freethinker's book discussion community," but is now simply, "quality books, good people and great conversations." Our LINKS page still reflects the previous theme and is no longer applicable to our current theme.
Click on the LINKS link in the upper green navigation bar. You'll see that the page is broken down into the following categories of links:
Atheism, Freethinking, Humanism
Book & Reading Resources
Science, History, Philosophy, etc...
BookTalk Members
Miscellaneous
As you can see the sites in the Atheism, Freethinking, Humanism category all have reciprocal links back to BookTalk.org. For this reason we cannot and will not delete those links. But all other links on the entire LINKS page are fair game for deletion.
What would be the best categories for a book discussion site? This is the first step for us. Let's decide on some categories. And then we can start putting appropriate links into the categories.
Ideas...
Author Sites
Book Sellers
Book & Reading Resources
Miscellaneous
Book Discussion Groups
I'm going to go through the current page right now and start deleting links that just don't apply to our current theme. I'd appreciate any and all comments and suggestions, but as I just said above the most important thing is to break the page into appropriate categories.
I'll be giving away free books to the members that help me the most with this project. I have wanted to work on this for quite a long time, but the task is a bit intimidating. So any help would really be appreciated.
Thank you. |

Chris - you might like to look at abebooks.com -
I don't know whether it is appropriate...but it is a great source for out-of-print and scarce books at reasonable prices and Worldwide.
The bookstore in which I work, on a very part-time basis, lists its books on this site....otherwise, I promise you....I have no other connection. |

Penelope
I added AbeBooks.com to the LINKS page. In fact I added many fantastic book sellers to the page. I'm still working on it, but I think you'll be pleased with the top 2 sections. Thanks for the suggestion. |

I don't know whether you will be interested or agreeable to this suggestion Chris.
But I will 'suggest' it anyway.....
What about a virtual 'Bar' on BT?
It could be a 'Coffee Bar' if you don't want an 'Alcohol Bar'....
But I am suggesting a bar like 'Cheers'.....where all kinds of people....as in the TV Series...could just come around and sit on 'virtual' chairs and relax and talk..........like in the book 'McCarthy's Bar'....
When new people don't know where to go for an 'outreach' (because a first look at BT can be confusing).....they might be drawn to a 'Bar' atmosphere......What do you think?
I would be happy to be the 'Landlady' - time zones permitting.....because, although I am not an academic....I am 'good' with people....or so I have been told.....and I do care. |

This suggestion doesn't really pertain to the LINKS page discussion so we might be best served by starting a new thread with a descriptive title.
Have you heard of Second Life? I am heavily considering creating a discussion area in Second Life dedicated solely to BookTalk.org. My brother could help design it. But Second Life has a HUGE learning curve. It is VERY complicated and requires a decent computer to handle the graphics. I'm pretty sure that the real complicated stuff isn't necessary for the average person to enjoy a virtual book discussion.
This idea will happen eventually, but it is really time consuming to even start such a project. |
