Hello!
My name is Tracey and I came across this site while searching for information about starting my own online book forum with friends. I was really intrigued and decided to join.
A little about me: I am a high school English teacher, an adjunct professor, and a mother of a two and a four year old. From reading books for school or for classes I teach and/or take, I have been very neglectful of reading for myself. This summer I have been making a concerted effort to read things unrealated to work and not limited to the toddler/preschool reading level.
In terms of my reading interests, they are multifarious. For example, I just finished The Dew Breaker by Edwidge Danticat and The Gravedigger's Daughter by Joyce Carol Oates. Before that I had just read Paranoia by J.E. Braun, Vinegar Hill by A. Manette Ansay, Plum Lovin' by Janet Evanovich, and The Tipping Point by Gladwell. Right now I have Son of a Witch by Maguire in my Ipod and Krik? Krak! by Danticat on my nightstand. I am open to a lot of genres and styles.
I look forward to talking books with you. |

Hello BabyBlues,
Welcome to Booktalk!
What sort of books do you and your friends plan to discuss at your book club?
I haven't read Son of a Witch but we have a side-bar discussion of Maguire's Wicked in the "Additional Fiction Book Discussion" forum.
We opened several threads according to theme, but the discussion was left unfinished. I would love to revisit the book and read it to the end. |

Ophelia,
The online book club we were toying with was still in its infant stages, so we hadn't determined the parameters. If I had to guess I would say mostly fiction (they are not generally nonfiction enthusiasts) and of varying degress of seriousness. I know that is so general it means almost nothing...sorry
I read Wicked years ago and really loved it...I even bought it for my mother and made her read it. I also read Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister which was good, but not as good as Wicked IMHO. I am not sure why it has taken me so long to get back and try Son of a Witch but so far I am enjoying it. I like how Maguire creates these layered characters.
If you wanted to hit the Wicked board I would love to pop in too.

Hello Tracey,
I'm not sure what you mean by the sentence above "If you wanted to hit the Wicked board..."
Does it mean you feel like posting in the Wicked threads?
In case it does, here is the reference to one of the threads:
That was just a coloquialsm meaning "if you want to visit the boards ..."
For example, people in this area say "do you want to hit the beach" or "do you want to hit the stores" etc
Sorry for the misunderstanding. |

This is pretty amusing to read! Ophelia is in France, so she is probably not familiar with all of the slang terms or whatever they are called over in the US.
I still think Wicked should be an official discussion soon. So many people love that book and it is sitting on my shelf still unread.
Welcome to BookTalk.org, Tracey. |
