Hello from an Aussie [bookworm]!

I've always loved reading. I get completely engrossed in a book. The true hallmark of a great book is if you simply can't put it down! I read 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' in two days. I'm always reading. Constantly. Usually I read more than 1 book at a time!

Some of my favourite books include:
Where Rainbows End by Cecilia Ahern - a beautiful book made all the more interesting because of the creative way it was written: through letters/emails/notes/etc.!
The Millenium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson - I'll admit, the third one was a little hard to get in to, but I loved the other ones so much I just had to read it, and sure enough, it too got as unputdownable as the others in the end! Kept me sitting on the edge of my seat, eager to turn each page so I could find out what happened next.
The Pact by Jodi Picoult - It's intense, and keeps you guessing until the very last page.

Welcome, bookworm. I'm wondering if you might be able to help me out with something. Years ago, I found a couple of photos of some odd looking trees, and I saved them without thinking to identify where they came from or what they were. I recently used one in an abstract piece of art I was working on, and I wanted to be able to tell people a little about the tree. For some reason I don't really understand, I have a feeling that they might be native to Australia, or maybe New Zealand. Anyway, I'm going to add the photo below, and if you get the chance and have any idea what these are, I would appreciate hearing from you. In any case, glad to have you with us, and I hope you find Booktalk as interesting as I do.

LeBeaux - The trees pictured are Dracaena cinnabari or Socotra Dragon Trees (they are sometimes called the Dragon Blood Tree though some other plants in the genus have that as their 'common' name too). They are native to Socotra which is a group of islands in the Indian Ocean near the Arabian Peninsula.

Hi Bookworm, and welcome.
the Stieg Larsson trilogy was absolutely stunning - some of the best books I've read this year. His early death has been a great loss to booklovers. I normally avoid 'detective' books, but these were brilliant. I was sceptical of finding another author writing in this genre that I could appreciate, but Jo Nesbo is also very good. Is there something special about Norway that produces writers like this?

No they are not from Australia - but nearly. Try Socotra dragon blood trees near Yemen in the Indian Ocean. Some African trees like baobab have floated across the Indian Ocean, but I don't know about these ones.

Wow! Thanks a million for the information. I am a part of an art/photography group on Facebook, and when I posted the piece of abstract computer art I mentioned, everyone wanted to know if the tree was real and what it was, which was when I realized I had never made a note of that. Now I can tell them. Here's the art piece, and thanks again.
