I just read an excellent book called Gut Feeling, by Jon Friesch. Available on Amazon here:

It's not one of the thousands of books designed to provide specific arguments about one issue or the other. This book is about what conservatives are like. It describes the worldview they take in to any issue or opinion they explore.
It's a very easy read - written conversationally with short chapters that are easy to come in and out of. Friesch is blogging excerpts on his site - gutfeelingblog.com.
I strongly recommend this book, whether you're a conservative of liberal. If you're liberal, this may not change your mind, but it will help you understand the philosophy you're rejecting and show you that conservatives generally want the same things you do - happy and healthy lives for themselves, their kids, their friends... everyone.
Disclosure: I'm a conservative, but I think it'd be good for anyone.
Anyway, I hope you can pick up a copy and find it worthwhile.
