Greetings from sholland in New Mexico!
Salutations fine people of book talk.org! I am very excited to join this forum and look forward to wonderful discussions with all of you in the near future. My name is Susan (sholland) and I currently call Albuquerque, NM my home. I am 21 years young, divorced and in the USAF Reserves. I also work part-time at Sears Portrait Studio and attend college at the University of New Mexico, aiming for my BS in Biology and later to medical school for neurology. I also have a beautiful 10 month old baby boy, Jon William. I consider myself to be a liberal and I am also an atheist and anti-theist.
I enjoy running, reading, memorizing facts and learning. I assume that many of you probably took a second look at memorizing facts, but this is one of my favorite past-times aside from reading. I like to pick things and learn them for no particular reason. For instance, just yesterday I decided to memorize every element on the periodic table. Is this relevant to anything currently happening in my life? No. Do I believe that this is pertinent information that all people should know? Yes. Alas, with the assistance of Tom Lehrer, I can now recite from memory all of the elements. I have comprised a list of things to memorize this year and I hope to add more to it as well. I am most looking forward to learning the Doomsday Algorithm. I think this is a fun and exciting trick everyone should know!
As for my reading, I am a lover of paperback books above all else, but upon my request, my mother bought me a Nook Color for my 21st birthday this year and I am still adapting to eBooks and still fighting the urge to purchase actual books. In a sense, I completely love my Nook Color; if I begin a book that I do not enjoy, I can start a new one instantly, or if I finish a book, I can begin a new one. It allows me to surf the web, play games (I love chess and sudoku) as well as read magazines (I enjoy Time and National Geographic) and so much more! I just miss the feeling of holding a book in my hands, or the scent of an old, dusty, rented library book.
I am all too familiar with forums as a college student taking courses online, in many ways I tend to loathe them, however, I am very eager to begin communication here. As I am sure many of you have, I made new year resolutions and one of them is to join a book club online! I have never been a member of a book club before, except for those pertaining to school, and am eager to begin my first discussion. I like to think that I am open-minded when it comes to reading and I hope to broaden my horizon here in that aspect. I am a goal-oriented person and I love to read, but I often find myself making excuses or repeating "not today" over in my head. I like to believe that if I have others looking to me for information or observations, I will be more obligated to engulf myself in the world of literature.
So, why am I here? Aside from joining a book club being a new year resolution, I also wanted to put together a list of books to read for this year, another task I feel attributes to my fault of procrastination. So, I hoped that this site will encourage me to continue reading and learning throughout the year as much as possible. I look forward to future discussions with everyone and have a wonderful year! (I also love to talk, if you haven't noticed already.)
