I doubt that this is what happened - but when a moderator sticks & unsticks a thread, the thread gets bumped up and receives a new time/date. (Sometimes a mod makes a mistake, and puts a 'stickypin' on the wrong thread, then has to undo it.)
Or - are these polls? If someone votes in an old poll, it gets bumped up. Sometimes when I visit, there's a page full of antique polls, and all the ongoing discussions have been bumped onto subsequent pages. That happens when someone new comes in and has fun answering all the old polls. It can be frustrating for the regulars, though.
