I am very interested in politics. I don't think i would run for office, but i am involved in local electoral processes. I have been part of get out the vote movements, and i personally encourage anyone who talks with me about politics to head to the voting booth.
One of the things that always hits me, when i do think about what it would be like to run for an office, is that i would never actually stand a chance of being elected in this country, for one reason alone. I would refuse to pretend that i was a christian.
I don't believe in god, and i would make no bones about it.
In this country, that immediately puts me out of serious contention.
Statistically, the more intelligent people are, the less they accept the notion of a personal god. The more intelligent people are exactly who we want to be in office. If that intelligent person wants to hold office, they have to lie about their belief. So, that means the honest intelligent people are facing a fundamental hurlde to participation in public life. Sad.
