Ever hear of the texas-sized garbage island in the pacific ocean?
Not exactly a garbage island. You couldn't stand on it, but the water there is a solution of plastic and water that is lethal to wildlife.
This will make you cringe every time you pop the top of a soda bottle. I never take plastic bags from the grocer, if i can avoid it. We take re-useable bags, or just carry things with our hands. If you got it to the register with your hands, you can get it to your fridge with your hands.

I feel like a do a lot to keep my impact on the environment down, but it's true. If you live in our society, you are throwing things out like crazy.
Everything comes in a plastic container. There is almost no escaping it, unless you are a self-sustaining gardener, but that is not a lifestyle that really exists in the developed world.
It is terribly depressing, but i think this video is essential viewing for everyone. We need to wince when we get that plastic bag. Do we really need it? can we carry our junk out to the car? Everyone taking small steps equates to giant impacts on the environment.
A lot more needs to happen then just not using plastic bags, but it is a start.
We need to seriously take a look at our disposable use lifestyle, as a planet.

Have any of you ever tried to calculate your environmental footprint? Very discouraging, I can tell you, even if you commute by bicycle over 4,000 miles per year as I do. The basic North American lifestyle is inherently energy intensive. Recycling is good, but it's sobering to realize how little it does in terms of overall environmental impact.

That is why we have to recycle on planetary scale. One million robot whales would be enough to eat the garbage dump in a few years, and the plastic in the dump could be used to build more whales - a virtuous circle.

I watched the second video. Japanese people are awesome like that. Even though they pack themselves in, bulldoze anything that isn't a cherry tree, and pave everything over with asphalt and concrete, they still care about the environment.
