| Professor Noam Chomsky has graciously offered to participate in a Live Author Chat regarding his book, Interventions. We have tentatively arranged for Oct. 4th, 7PM EST. Looks a great reason to get a hold of the book and prepare for the chat!

We can expect the topics to range from the war in Iraq, the conflict in Israel/Palestine, media propaganda, threat of nuclear war, corporate globalization, grassroots democratic organizing, anarchism, imperialism, global warming, the democracy deficit in the US, and perhaps linguistics, cognitive science, education theory and maybe a little philosophy too.

|

Cool!
I like the sound of that. I wonder what Chomsky's chatrooom skills are like?

| I believe we will be doing an email interview of Chomsky as opposed to a live chat. That book forum has received far too little activity to warrant having such a prominent author as a chat guest. It just wouldn't be fair. If Dissident decides to hold a live chat I'll advertise it as best as possible, but for now I believe he has decided to interview Chomsky through email instead. |

| That's reasonable, though I'm disappointed I won't get a chance to chat with Chomsky. |

I am willing to pursue a Live Chat with Noam Chomsky, even though the discussion of his book, Interventions has been somewhat limited. There are two concerns: 1. He may not be able due to personal constraints related to his wife's health; 2. We will only get three or four participants.
In case of 1., a list of e-mailed questions may prove the best way for him to participate when scheduling constraints are as turbulent and unpredicatable as his at this time.
In case of 2., would it be worth his time to participate in an Author discussion with only three or four people, of which only a few actually read his book? I don't think Chomsky would find it problematic, but it doesn't look too good for Booktalk and future Author Chats if only a few members show up.
So, if I can get a solid number of members to commit to the discussion, I will pursue an Author Chat. If not, then we will assemble an e-mail correspondence of Q/A with Professor Chomsky.
Frankly, any questions regarding US foreign policy, political theory and practice, cognitive science and linguistics, the future of the planet and the human race, or the role of dissidents and intellectuals in society will all be fair game. I don't think reading his recent book will be a necessity, but you might want to puruse the discussion to see if any questions arise. There are plenty of links to Chomsky and his work there as well.
I will decide which direction to go by the start of next week. Please use this thread to state your preference and commitment.
Thanks! |

Professor Chomsky has agreed to answer our questions via an e-mail correspondence. Let's use this link: http://www.booktalk.org/questions-for-noam-chomsky-an-e-mail-correspon dence-t3805.html to gather questions or comments about Interventions, or anything pertaining to US foreign policy, international affairs, political theory, democratic activism, social justice, anarchism, linguisitics, or nuclear war- to name a few subjects. You don't have to read the book to participate, but it might prove helpful to explore some of the threads to generate questions.
We will submit these questions and comments to Professor Chomsky at the end of October and he will generously and thoughtfully respond as his busy schedule allows. |
