The situation in New Orleans and along the hard-hit areas of the gulf coast would seem to be excellent examples writ in miniature of Diamond's point in 'Collapse'. Filling in and building on delta land, bulding higher and higher levees to contain a river that is naturally meant to spread in high water times is a sure recipe for disaster. Now there is toxic soup pouring into Lake Ponchatraine and the gulf from the residential and industrial wastes. And of course, we learn nothing...all will be rebuilt.
