SPOILER: I'll give away what happens in the these chapters.
Mariam's life keeps getting nastier. She suffers through multiple miscarriages, and her husbands becomes increasingly more abusive. You wonder how much the character will suffer.
Hosseini's writing is strong, though I have a minor quibble. Almost everything is narrated from Mariam's perspective, but on page 81 there's a statement her neighbor Fariba made when Mariam wasn't around. That threw me off and seems kind of odd. |
