I'm only catching bits and pieces of this on the news. But is it true that the United Arab Emirates had ties or funding connections to the 9/11 highjackers? If that's true, then why would we even consider selling our ports to them? Does this offer any clue to our current leader's sincerity and credibility when he speaks of national security? or this "War on Terrorism?"
Anyone here have a good explanation for this? |

I'd bet that all of the GCC (if there is one left) states had ties to funding the 9/11. CHarity is a islamic edict and the money often goes to very interesting places.
Nevertheless, without the stability of the gulf states, the world oil market would experience volatility. Bushteam (and all admins) don't want that (very much more than they can justify the price rising for their own domestic oil cronies). |

| I too am flabbergasted by Bush even considering allowing an Arab company to control American ports. The terrorists have to be shaking their heads in bewilderment too. Are we trying to hand them our asses on a silver platter? This is just plain nuts. |

| The USA's insistence on depending on oil really does that for you. _________________________________________________________

| The White House appeared to have considered the deal routine, especially because so many foreign companies — from Singapore, Denmark and Japan — run major port terminals in the United States and have for years. NYTimes today |

Why would we not control our own ports dammit!
Why do we always look to give away jobs and industry to other countries?!
WTF!
This is a colossal blunder on Bush's part. Even the regular supporters have not risen to his defense on this one!

| I'm learning more and more about this situation and now think I may have jumped to conclusions. We all do this at times and as freethinkers we ought to try to avoid forming hasty opinions. But I have an appointment so.... |

| Sometimes I don't know what to think. I can't stand politics. Everyone lies and exaggerates and is biased. None of us really know the truth, and all of us believe things are facts that are probably bullshit. |

Quote: Chris: Everyone lies and exaggerates....
Yes. Yes, indeed they do.
This should have been a clue. I had to look up the exact quote, but I remember when he said it. And I thought it was just adorable. Either during or right before we invaded Iraq, Rumsfeld was asked if he might be deceiving the press, and he answered paraphrasing Churchill, "In wartime, truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies."
Then he continued with: "I don't recall that I've ever lied to the press. I don't intend to. And it seems to me that there will not be reason for it."
Isn't that lovely? ohhh, I thought that was great. I really loved it.
So what can we conclude from that? In my judgment, he told that guy "yes, I'm going to be lying to the press -- starting with this one: 'I don't recall that I've ever ... blah blah blah"
Sometimes those lies are just to cover one's ass. Sometimes they cost thousands of American lives. Needlessly. And they get away with it. Their propagandists get paid millions of dollars to keep those lies going daily.
But what about this ports sale? Do ya'll think this is a wise move? Or do ya'll think we're inviting more trouble? I've already been concerned that a very small percentage of the cargo bins are actually being checked. And I don't think this sale is making things any better. |
