"Primates and Philosophers: How Morality Evolved" by Frans de Waal has won the June, July & August non-fiction book poll so get a copy of this book so you’re ready to dive into the discussion. The “Primates and Philosophers” forum is already open. We could use a volunteer to lead this discussion.
A brand new thread has been created for fiction book suggestions to help us select our next official fiction book. The past thread has been locked. Please make suggestions and give feedback on other people's suggestions.
You need to have 25+ forum posts to make suggestions, can only make up to 3 total suggestions, need to include a link to where we can learn more about your suggestions, and most importantly need to provide feedback on other people's suggestions.

Chris,
I feel a bit frustrated that this book, slated for June is already being discussed. I've just ordered my book, it will take a week to get to me. I am still working on a book that is being discussed for May and will not start the de Waal book for at least two weeks, with the discussion begun, already I am behind. I think it is much better if the discuss begins nearer to the date set.
Jackie

The "Primates and Philosophers" forum was created and opened up for Search Engine Optimization reasons. If we wait until June 1, 2009 the search engines won't have enough time to spider our site, learn we're associated with that book, and bring us new traffic. We've always created forums a bit early, when possible, so that we gain new members searching for that book title.
I can understand your feelings, but it is a necessary evil for an online book discussion site. It is a science to get word out on the web that we're going to be reading and discussing "Primates and Philosophers," or any particular book, and creating the forums early has proven to be the best method. Usually, nobody posts in that forum till closer to the date.
Look at it as a two-way street. We still have books advertised in the top Current Books section that we read in January, February and March. We always have books up for a much longer time than their scheduled discussion times....unless the forum is created late for personal reasons.

I would suggest to all members who are interested in this book that they first get the article by steven pinker, published several months ago, in The New York Times Sunday Magazine. I think it is called, "Why we are good," and it is an excellent treatment on the subect of how morality evolved. The article will serve as a good background for this book. By the way, this is a subject that has been written on by many people. My biggest problem with the article and I anticipate with this book is-so what? I am not quite sure how it is going to enrich my life, besides having a philosophical discussion, which is always fun. Common sense tells us that we are a moral society-we are hardwired to detect "cheats" and if we were not moral or good natured, mankind could not have evolved.
