I was hoping somebody else was gonna' talk, so I could just fall in.

Is this the part where Mr. Mamiya (is that is name?) tells him to go to that little town and watch people? Or is it when he's told about the 'well' being a good place to think about things?

I cannot figure out what is meant by 'revenge' though.
