Review : Chain Mail

Hey everybody, sorry I haven’t been posting for ages. I haven’t really found really good books to write reviews about. Many were left unfinished. Anyway.

Chain Mail by Hiroshi Ishizaki is a fictional book based in Japan about 4 teenagers who come together over an internet story site, each writing from the perspective of a given character – A school girl who is stalked, the stalker, the school girls boyfriend/tutor, and the detective. The story is wonderfully written and is divided into the different characters perspective- much like Jodi Picoult.

As the story progresses, one of the characters miraculously goes missing and everything begins to unravel. I disliked this as the story became more and more confusing. Especially because a lot of the names were very similar, i.e. Yuki and Yukari, Mai and Mayumi.

I’d recommend this book to teenagers looking for an easy read. its one of those books where you find you’ve read half of it in an hour. Its got complex ideas in simple words and the storyline is compelling and beautifully developed. Its a shame the kink in the plot ruined it for me.

Review : My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult is an intense novel that explores feelings and situations not many have the courage to talk or write about. It was a fantastic novel that was beautifully written. The signature style of writing from different perspectives that is Jodi Picoult’s was brilliant for this novel as the controversial topic does need both sides of the “arguement” and I think when one finishes the novel, they are left thinking about the situation for many days to come.

The characters feelings were developed fairly well however as each chapter was divided into characters, I feel each character could’ve been developed that little bit more, however I feel this way towards the other 2 books of hers I have read.

The plot of the book is as intriguing and well developed as you would expect from Ms Picoult. Containing her usual fantastic mix of science, law and love this plot is thought-provoking and simply amazing. It follows the story of a 13 year old girl Anna Fitzgerald who petitions for medical emancipation from her parents. Her sister, Kate, has a rare form of leukemia and Anna as originally conceived to harvest blood from her umbilical cord for her sister. Kate eventually relapses and Anna became a donor for any other bodily substance needed to treat Kate.
The heart of this novel is partly on the plot, but mostly based on the interactions between the characters and gaining the empathy, not only for Anna but for Kate and their parents.

I found I had to re-read some parts of the novel, especially the medical lingo, because there are so many different interactions and sub-plots that one can very easily get confused. However I thoroughly enjoyed this book; it certainly expanded my way of going about things- seeing them from more than 1 angle- and I would recommend this book to high school students and adults.

Review : The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien.

Hey everyone.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien is an awesome book for those seeking adventure and an escape from their daily lives. It was particularly enjoyable for me as it was my second time reading it, and I finished the novel in under 4 days.

It follows the story of Bilbo Baggins (those who have read/watched the Lord of the Rings are familiar with this name) and an adventure he takes with 13 dwarves. I won’t say too much or it’ll ruin the awesome-ness (excuse my bad english) and surprises of the book.
This book has an awesome sense of humor created by the attitude of Bilbo but also the depth of description of the world this novel is set in was done brilliantly.
My only criticism is that sometimes Tolkien can describe unnecessary places or his descriptions become very long and tiring. However this is made up by the vivid images that are created throughout the more exciting and intense adventures of Mr Baggins.

Overall, I would recommend this novel to anyone I meet. I think the youngest I would read this to is about 8 or 9 and the eldest is unlimited. I would read this over and over again and I think its time for me to start the Lord of the Rings :)
