Bike + City

If you are interested in cycling AND/OR cities, then my new book may be of interest. Entitled "Biking Through the 'Hoods, Exploring Fifty American Cities by Bicycle", it is part bike travelogue, part jaunt through urban history. From New York to LA, Phoenix to Detroit, St Paul to San Antonio, the author (me!) rides through a variety of urban habitats, from inner city blight to gilded ghetto, from post-industrial wasteland to pristine urban forest. Along the way, the recent (past half century) history of the neighborhoods traversed are brought to light. Touring by bike gives an "on the street" perspective, supplemented by treks through alleys, bike paths, and occasionally, urban fields.

Paul_p, have you done the 5 borough bike ride in NYC? It is something I'd love to try. Unfortunately this year's ride coinsides with my daughter's college graduation - not to mention the $75 or so price tag.

You lucky bastard! Did you by any chance get inspiration from David Byrne's book Bicycle Diaries? What is the most significant difference between your book and his, if you are familiar with it? Your post is timely, because "Biking through the 'Hoods" just went on my Christmas list. I'm very much looking forward to reading it.

Haven't done the 5-borough NYC ride but my nephew did it last year - said it was a real blast, with tons of riders of all types. Did do 3 boroughs on my own, though.

I joke that David Byrne stole my idea! I was well on the way with my book when I first heard about his. I glanced at his book, Bicycle Diaries; it is probably 3/4 about foreign cities, so that's a big difference right there.
