Big crush

I had a thought regaurding the Big Crush. Supposedly matter in the universe is not slowing down and it doesn't seem likely that it will eventually slow down. It seems that the universe will simply be diluded into nothingness.

So I was thinking suppose the universe as some scientists have theorized is not infinite but finite yet inescapable. My understanding is that its something like the screen on a game of Astroids. If an object exits on one side it immediately enters on the other. So the universe would first spread outward becoming dilluded, then as it reachs the outer edge it would begin moving back towards the center eventually being compressed to a single point of energy which would then expand producing another big bang.

I don't think you allowed for entropy.

The universe continues to expand.

As it expands, its individual components continue to expend energy, `recycling' the dead remnants of old stars.

However, the `recycling' process is vastly less than perfect.

Over greater and greater distances, gravity as a means of collecting new matter to be `recycled' becomes less and less efficient.

So...the stars drift further and further apart, and go out one by one...

Thats why a big crush theory in a universe of infinite space is impossible. Gravity doesn't draw matter back to the center in my moddle. Matter simply continues on its course until it reaches the outer edge and beggins a journey back towards the center along a constant course. When the matter converges in the center it is once again compressed to the supper dence point of energy it was originally.

Ah...there is the problem. You are assuming that the universe has `fixed' borders. Reality is the borders would continue to expand, so matter never reaches the `edge' and cannot be diverted back.

Now...you are also assuming a uniform shape for the universe, which is also very possibly not the case. So...even if your idea were accurate about reaching the edge and being diverted back towards the center, if the universe was of irregular shape, then the convergance would be towards a number of locations, not a single central point. Indeed, it is entirely possible that some matter would not return to the centerpoint at all.

everexpanding finite space is still finite. However, from our POV, it might as well be infinite.

Then I think thats another theory entirely. The one I heard basically describes the whole thing as being like a scrolling effect. Like a game of astroids or the Train Station in Matrix Revolutions.

I'll have to defer to the astrophysicists on this one, but didn't Einstein's theory state that space itself was curved? If that is the case, your idea may have merit. Maybe the universe, or cosmos, is continually expanding, folding back in on itself, then erupting in a new Big Bang, as your model suggests.

I really don't know, but it is a poetic image.
