Quote: Elections are essentially bought, and the democratic culture is severely eroded. Furthermore, the population is aware of it, by and large, but many feel helpless. It is also a very frightened country, particularly men, polls indicate. That has been true for a long time, and those fears are exploited by unscrupulous leaders to divert the attention of the people they are kicking in the face, not to speak of what they are doing to coming generations. Nevertheless, though differences are not very large, they do exist. The current incumbents may do severe, perhaps irreparable, damage if given another hold on power a very slim hold, but one they will use to achieve very ugly and dangerous ends. In a very powerful state, small differences may translate into very substantial effects on the victims, at home and abroad. It is no favor to those who are suffering, and may face much worse ahead, to overlook these facts. Keeping the Bush circle out means holding ones nose and voting for some Democrat, but thats not the end of the story. The basic culture and institutions of a democratic society have to be constructed, in part reconstructed, and defeat of an extremely dangerous clique in the presidential race is only one very small component of that.

| I'm still undecided and not registered either way, but my views favor the republican party over the democratic party. |

| I'm a registered republican in the US. I find myself to be a liberal on social issues most of the time, however, I find myself agreeing with conservatives on foreign and defense issues. I believe in republics (mixed gov'ts without a king), but not pure democracy (it's not my fault I've read my Thucydides). |

Have you noticed that Liberal = left wing, in America, sort of middle of the road in England and pretty much right wing in Europe? |

I'm shocked that more members are claimingto be Republicans than Democrats. Most of the strong arguments on our boards seem to reflect the liberal perspective.

Maybe liberals are more outspoken than conservatives, because it sure seems like nobody on this forum supports Bush or conservatism in general. I find the same scenario when in the religion chat rooms on Yahoo. And we know that Bush is currently leading in the polls. I just find it confusing that almost all Internet talk is supporting Kerry.

Chris, it's probably just the places you frequent online. I'm sure there are plenty of conservative boards where conservatives gather. Or maybe it's a personality thing of people who tend to be conservative tend not to have the type of personality that enjoys internet chat rooms and discussion boards. I don't know if that's a possibility, but I do know that my family is filled with conservatives, and I can't think of a single one of them that frequents chat or boards (that I know of, anyway). They are definitely outspoken in person.
Speaking of family, my mother is a Democrat and my father is a Republican. Is it unusual for that to happen? I am an independent. I used to lean sort of towards more towards Republican, but I have gradually migrated the other way, because of social issues. As far as economics go, I still sort of lean right. But when it comes time to vote, I often don't even get to the economic issues because I would never vote for someone who is anti-abortion or anti-gay rights. That doesn't make me Democrat by default, does it? |
