Re: A million causes, why do you think it was magic? This clips sums it up nicely.
I absolutely love that movie, Milla Jovovich, and Joan of Arc. This scene is absolutely amazing, where the "devil" or "God" or whatever hallucination Joan is having breaks down everything she believes in by breaking down every action she's ever taken and every "sign from God" that she was on the right track, trying to derail her in her hour of most desperate need, before the English burn her. Even though I obviously knew the outcome of this movie, I cried when they lit the stake.
This movie (and the true story it is based on) has been inspirational to me, not in the belief in God, but as an example of a driven woman who defied all odds to do what she needed to do, and an example of how dirty politics within religion can defile even the most prized and shining beacon of the true message of their so-called faith.
I would suggest anyone with any inkling of interest in Joan of Arc watch this movie (Luc Besson's The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc). It is well acted, well filmed, well written, and absolutely beautiful and moving. Milla Jovovich is also my favorite actress, and I haven't watched a Luc Besson movie I didn't like, so I may be biased, but it wouldn't hurt to give it a try.
If they hadn't revealed the gag to these unsuspecting good samaritans, how many of them would have gone home thinking they had witnessed something supernatural?
was it an echo of the past? Is it a vision of the future? Are they seeing destiny?
no.

Give me a break. The only thing confusing about this clip is why, in this day of Punked the 'victims' aren't looking around for the hidden camera.
On the other hand, I once had a role in a miracle which is probably still being reported at family gatherings today.
It all started years ago when the Orlando International Airport was a POC terminal. One night my wife and I were there to pickup a friend of hers. He flight was delayed until the wee hours of the morning and the terminal was almost deserted. I was sitting on a bench and my wife had sat down in a wheel chair. Why? No reason. As the time for the arrival neared an obviously enebriated young man showed up holding a handful of flowers which appeared to have been picked by the side of the road. He told us that he was meeting his girlfriend and that they were going to try one more time to make it work. As he excitedly talked about their future together he kept glancing at my wife in the wheel chair. The flight landed and as the plane was taxiing to the terminal, my wife slapped her legs and said, "well, I guess it's time," and she stood up. The guy's eyes got big as saucers and I yelled, "it's a miracle." He grabbed the his necklace and said, "yeah, it must be this cross."
The moment was too good, and neither of us told him that my wife was not crippled. A few minutes later we saw the guy with his girlfriend both looking in our direction while he whispered and held the cross.

Re: A million possible causes, why do you choose magic?
I watched an interesting program about the history of angels and demons on the history channel yesterday.
Towards the end of the program they talked about modern angel intervention stories, and i couldn't hold in my incredulity.
One story was of a family who's newborn baby was 3 months early. Very sad. The baby was in a terrible state and the mother prayed that someone would be there to take care of the baby when the parents werent allowed to be there. (kept away for medical reasons) that is all very understandable. New parents in a tough situation. The baby recovered and lives a healthy life. Of course, this recovery was attributed to angel intervention. Why?
The parents said that the baby girl was in a terrible situation. 1 in 4 babies born like that die. OK. So, many more live through that situation than die? 75% chance of everything working out fine is pretty good. The baby was statistically likely to pull through just fine.
Once again, lack of control, hightened emotional toll and people leap to wild conclusions.
What further leads the parents to believe an angel was invovled was the child asking about angels, specifically the ones who look after babies. Basically, the child fed back the exact thing she had been hearing her whole life to the parent, and the parent considered it some wild leap of intuition, or a communication with the some cosmic sentience, rather than a child overhearing the conversations people have about her on a daily basis.
Another story in this program:
A soldier in WWII is sleeping in an abandoned house during his down-time. (common at the time, apparently) He hears a persistant knock at the door, goes to look and sees a commander from the 5th division, in full military gear, who tells him he has to vacate the building immediately.
Soldier protests, saying he is in his off-time, but is railroaded into vacating anyway.
He comes back to the building later and discovers that it was hit by a shell during the intervening time, and there is a hole in the floor "Right where i was sleeping". Later he talks to his fellow soldiers and they don't buy the story, and tell him that the 5th division is hundreds of miles away, and that commander couldn't have been at the building...
Solution... ANGEL!
Why would this make any sense to anybody? You have a man show up at your door, in a war zone, dressed up like a soldier, he tells you to move out of a building which later proves to be a target. Sounds like a soldier to me.
"Wait, nobody knew who he was!"
So that makes him a cosmic entity from beyond time and space?! A force for good from outside our understanding of the universe?!
Or... Maybe he was just a guy that nobody recognized? A military guy, in a military uniform, right in the middle of a war zone, where it would be perfectly understandable for such a guy to be?
It still makes my brain hurt. Why jump to this rediculous conclusion?

Re: A million possible causes, why do you choose magic?
Well, obviously it wasn't an angel. The first story was a kindly alien (who had abducted the parents in the first place, causing the pre-mature birth and came back to "right" things) and the second story was a ghost. Geez, you should have known that.....!

What do they think? Things like this seem a miracle, or the work of gods. They don't happen often, and they seem like they may have been conjured to give YOU personally, a sign.
The truth is less personal, but far more interesting.
