Saffron, your knowledge and "passion" for poetry is clear. Again, I know very little about poetry, and the mechanics of this writing form. However, I am confident when visiting the poetry forum, I am confident that I will learn something because of your knowledge. I will say that I have read more poetry, here on BT over the last few months than I have in my entire life. The discussions between yourself and DWill, and also oblivion that I have read, have given me a new appreciation of poetry. It is my fear, that if member written pieces of poetry are placed into a general writing forum, these pieces will not get your attention. Who is better qualified to discuss member written poetry than yourself? I say this with a clean nose. If everything connected with poetry can be found in one place, I do believe it would benifit the visitors of the forum.
I think you are right, Suzanne. I guess member written poetry belongs with the rest of the poetry threads.

Something like? I love this! Gives me pictures in my head of coffee shops, and comfy chairs. I'm not an author, but I would certainly click on to the "Author's Lounge", pull up a chair and listen to the discussions. Sounds informal and inviting, perfect
Author's Lounge is inspired! Great idea Interbane.

Boy, do I love this idea! I would love to have my 3 favorite forums links right there waiting for me to click.

Just a side note to everyone who has posted and mentioned the poetry forum -- thanks for all the kind words. I am so glad to hear that a few of you, against your natural inclination or better judgment, find yourselves peeking in on Passion for Poetry.

Shouldn't it be Writer's Lounge? I think author implies published whereas a writer can be published or simply aspiring to be.

Good point. I guess it depends if the forum is for writers or for authors hawking their lasts book.

I think someone serious enough to write would consider themselves an author, even if they are unpublished. Thinking of yourself as an author is empowering. I think the title would give people a sense of importance in visiting the forum. Yet, I won't pretend to know how people would react. If people feel too 'subpar' to enter the forum, that would be a bad thing. A lot of it would depend on the threads we have going I think. Any published authors hawking their books would need to be directed to the other forums, suggestions and fiction/non-fiction.

Re: A community discussion of our forum names, descriptions and categories
I like the idea of a "Writer's" Lounge. Are we only catering to those who write books (authors)? Would we discourage poets from entering this forum, who aren't considered authors but are still certainly writers?
Also, if one of the forum's goals is to help aspiring writers who haven't yet been published and don't necessarily live the life of a writer but still have a talent and desire to write, I think calling it a "Writer's Lounge" vs. an "Author's Lounge" would be more inviting.

Re: A community discussion of our forum names, descriptions and categories
My only concern with naming the forum "writer's" lounge, instead of "author's" lounge, is that there may be confusion and cross posting with the "creative writing" forum. Is it wise to have two "writing" forums?

Descriptions will come next. We still don't have our forum names.
As you can see the "Special Forums" section has been created and I have placed the "Short Stories" and "A Passion For Poetry" forums in this section. The next step is to add a few brand new forums.

Re: A community discussion of our forum names, descriptions and categories
The points for "writer's lounge" rather than "author's lounge" are all valid. Each person's perception of the words will be different. I personally wouldn't feel excluded if it were an author's lounge. I'd also like to draw in new authors, and am not sure if they'd be as motivated to go there if it were 'writer's' rather than 'authors'. My vote is for Author's Lounge, but I'm fine either way.

Re: A community discussion of our forum names, descriptions and categories
I agree with you, Interbane. We want to draw in published authors with the "Author's Lounge" forum. These authors can interact with one another and with our members. The forum can be a resource for both published authors and aspiring authors. The point is that we really need to attract published authors to BookTalk.org and then provide them some sort of value other than a place to spam. As of right now we get a handful of authors joining ever week just to plug their books. And then they vanish never to return. We offer them nothing and this needs to change.
We'll create some other forums for our unpublished author members! That is next.

Please look in the newly created "Special Forums" section and let me know what you think of the forum names and descriptions. Do the forum descriptions do a good job of explaining what each forum is for? Would you suggest any edits to the descriptions? And what other forums might we need?

Re: A community discussion of our forum names, descriptions and categories
Hi Chris, just to say thanks for the superb work you do to make Booktalk a great discussion forum. Your idea to target writers is excellent. Many writers feel they have to focus on their writing rather than getting distracted by discussion boards, but providing a friendly place for conversation is a great thing.
One issue from me is that book discussions should be for three months. Often people only read the book after it has been listed (yes, true) and once the official time of discussion is over it can dissuade people from commenting.
